To keep ourselves from feeling too sad, we headed to the east coast of Florida to conquer some new territory. Our first stop was Kennedy Space Center. We met up with our brother and sister Rob and Catherine and their kids and spent the day touring the Center. It was a lot of fun and really quite interesting. I especially enjoyed a 3D movie they have about the Space Station they are building right now...pretty amazing! Since living here we've seen two shuttle launches. That kind of stuff really makes me proud to be an American (not to be cheesy...but it really does).
Apparently, both Bryan and Eleanore thought it was pretty neat to meet a real astronaut.
Touching the moon (or at least a rock from the moon)!
The next morning we got up and headed to the historic old city. First, we saw the lighthouse, which was especially neat for me because lighthouses were one of my Dad's favorite things. In fact, after he passed away we each took a lighthouse from his collection to remember him. The one I took for Eleanore was the St. Augustine lighthouse, so we were glad to see it in person.
Then, we headed to historic St. George Street and ate lunch at a Colombian restaurant and browsed the market. We spent the afternoon visiting the sites including the Castillo de San Marcos (now a national monument, it took 23 years to build - complete in 1695 - and has served as refuge for several armies including the Spaniards, the Union and the Confederates). While we were there they blasted a "cannon ball" (bread) into the bay. We also saw the statue of the treasure hunter Ponce de Leon, Flagler College, the oldest wooden schoolhouse, a couple of Cathedrals, the Fountain of Youth and toured Ripley's Believe It or Not.The city gate on historic St. George Street

The next morning we stopped in Daytona and met my sister Shay and her kids for lunch before making the drive home. What a great weekend: great activies, great weather, great company, great memories!
What would a long post be without a photo of an Eleanore trick? Here is her new favorite...drinking water (from a straw, from my cup, from a bottle, from a sippy...anything we'll let her try!).

Emily, what a fun fourth of July... totally memorable! That is great you guys are taking the time to visit these places!
I love the pictures you took, especially the one of Eleanore in the space suit. That is so cool that you have seen two shuttle launches...Wow, I bet that was a sight to see!
I actually glanced at the pictures before I read what they were about and I noticed the lighthouse, St. Augustine, and I thought I had seen that in your parents home.
It was fun to read about your holiday weekend, it too is my favorite holiday!
How fun!!! Thats neat you got to go see that lighthouse...I'm a little jealous, Glad you had a good 4th!!
And I love Eleanore's headband, it's really cute, the black one...did you make it too?
I love the space center, when I was in jr. high I totally wanted to be an astronaut. If only we could snap our fingers and go on some fun outings together.
ps - I think it's defineatly the buckley wives who are responsible for such cute babies! :)
Mims...You gave me the black headband...silly.
Way to go on getting out and touring a little. I Love the Kennedy Space Center, but haven't been since I was little. I have wanted to call you but our cell phone minutes are almost out, so next month, or the weekend:-) I've been thinking of you lots as we have been moving and everything, and all you went through. I never realized how tough it could be, wish I would have given you more moral support!
I too miss Island Park and our regular 4th of July festivities....but it is good that we can still have fun even when we cant be where we want to be. I love the pictures of the lighthouse and Castillo de San Marcos. Maybe someday we too will make a trip to St. Augustine to tour the oldest city in America. Meet you at the beach friday for dinner and sunset!?
What a fun weekend you guys had! St. Augustine's looks like a really neat place to visit. And of course little Elle is as cute as ever!
These are fun pictures!! It almost looks like a foreign country, not just a little city in Florida. Glad you guys had a fun time..I loved seeing you!
p.s
Is there really an astronaut inside that white suit? Bryan's looking at him/it like he doesn't believe it.
What a fun weekend. It is so cool that you can explore a different part of the country being out there. Tons of fun things and new experiences. El is looking cute drinking out of the straw. She sounds like Grady, wanting to see and do everything.
