Monday morning Bryan walked out the door to work right on schedule at 7:10 a.m. I locked the door behind him and started making Eleanore breakfast. About 45 seconds later he was knocking on the door waiting to tell me that our car had been broken into. He had left his work laptop in the car (I know, and he knows, not the best idea) and it was stolen. So was my purse, but luckily there was nothing of any value inside my purse since my wallet was in the diaper bag which was in the house.
Our next door neighbors car was also broken into, and they were hit much worse losing a GPS, a laptop, a wallet and a fancy watch.
When the police arrived to take the report (which I am confident is not being pursued in any form) we learned that there had been other break ins in our neighborhood.
I am so sad about this. I can't understand the thought process of stealing at all. Plus, don't these people have any guilt? The laptop was sitting next to a pile of 2010 primary handbooks with a big picture of Jesus on the front -- I mean, come on.
I am going on the assumption that the thieves are teenagers who live in our community, only because they ditched our neighbors wallet halfway down the block and only stole the $40 of cash that was inside instead of taking all the credit cards too. Also, I think it must of been someone who lived here because there are cameras at the gate (not that I think the police are checking them).
Beyond the loss of Bryan's laptop and having to pay to repair the broken window, it has made us feel very violated -- kind of insecure. You know, you should feel safe at your own home. I guess it could have been much worse, the garage door opener was right inside the car, they could've opened the garage and walked right into our home to do who knows what.
So, our tip of the week is to take all goods of any value inside the house with you and leave the doors to your vehicle unlocked. At least then if a jerk feels the urge to break into your car they won't crush a window in the process.

BLAH! That sucks sooo bad! I'm so sorry guys! And I'm sure it's just punk kids like you said being puke faced brats....
Good advice. That totally STINKS. If it makes you feel any better (which I'm sure it doesn't) it's not just FL... Travis's car got robbed recently in the IF hospital parking lot... yup, right where all the vulnerable, sick, elderly people reside (not to mention the 90% LDS population). Nice. The cops here didn't care either- they actually told Travis that cars at the hospital are broken into pretty regularly. Double nice... um, maybe time to start patrolling the hospital? I mean, really, is there anything better to do in IF anyway? Well, so there's our story... on the up side, Travis didn't lock his doors (which is probably why he was robbed) but we didn't have our window broken. Again, that totally stinks. And I agree, lucky you that they didn't think of the garage door opener...then you'd have to move! Is there any way you can check those security cameras? How annoying- those kids should at least know that there are consequences! Even if they are punk kids.
Yikes - I am so sorry Emmy! That's horrible. A couple of houses ago we had someone break in and they stole totally random stuff. The creepiest part was that we were pretty sure that they heard me come home and they ran out the garage door while I was walking in the front. Probably punk neighborhood kids in that case too. So sorry for you but thanks for the good reminder.
Oh man that is terrible. So frustrating to spend money on things like that. Our first week in Boise someone broke my window, and what did they steal? Not my stero, or new speakers, but my case of 50 burned cd's. So stupid. I totally thought your neighborhood was very hard to get into, so it makes sense that it was probably someone who lives there:-(
That's horrible! We've had our car broken into 3 times here in Provo. I totally agree with the feeling of violation! Our neighbors even had their car broken into while parked inside their garage! Criminals will not stop at anything.
What a pain. I agree, I don't know why people think they can steal others stuff. It really does make you feel violated.
Eleanore is so cute with her little doll "robbie." I love it.
DANG!!! What jerks! I'm sorry that had to happen. I hope they find them soon.
I am sorry to hear that you had some valuables stolen! No word on who it could have been? Feeling insecure in your own neighborhood has to be the worst feeling. What a relief that they didn't use the garage door opener to get in to your home.
Thanks for the tips, definitely one to consider even living in Utah!
Yeah, it happened here also quite a few times. A house 2 doors down, but didn't make it, just need to replace door. The neighbor across the street on the corner had the van broken into twice! Purse, gps, laptop! I'll never figure out why people leave their purses in the car. It would just never occur to me. Maybe because I was born and raised in the Bronx and you just don't do stuff like that. Thank goodness it wasn't worse.
