Early this month we took a road trip to Savannah to meet up with Bryan's sister Kim and her family who recently moved from Nebraska to South Carolina for a year-long medical fellowship. We are so happy they are close enough to get to see (hopefully) a few times this year. We made the trip caravan style with Rob's family. We left after Bry and Rob got off work on Thursday night and after about two hours the kids all went to sleep, making the six hour drive quit pleasant (the drive home however was made in the day and was pretty miserable since Ivy and Maya don't enjoy sitting in their car seats at all. Eleanore I have to say is probably the world's best traveler. Not one complaint.)
While in Savannah we bunked up with all three families in the historic O'Connor House on Broughton Street. It was a beautifully decorated restored home and had plenty of space for everyone to hang out and kids to play. We arrived in the middle of the night and went right to bed.
The next day we got up and went on a horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic district. It was a fun experience and was neat to get a little history on the town (did you know it has been through three major fires and is home to Forrest Gump's bench?). After the carriage we walked in the heat to a Mexican restaurant for lunch. Don't ask me why we went for Mexican instead of some good southern food. I guess it sounded good, but we should of opted for some friend chicken. :) By then everyone was ready for a break so we headed back to the house where the babies and grown ups rested and the kids enjoyed playing together. Eleanore sure loves her cousins and has asked about them repeatedly since returning.
That afternoon we went and got ice cream at the 91-year-old Leopold's Ice Cream Parlor.
The next morning we took a walk down River Street where we window shopped and saw lots of cargo boats floating along. There was some beautiful scenery including a really neat river wall and beautiful greenery along way.
It was so hot, we did our best to protect the babies from the sun.
Els enjoyed throwing pennies in several wishing ponds along the way.
That evening we went to Forsyth Park (a 30 acre park in the middle of Savannah's Historic District) where Ivy had her first ride on a swing and Maya her second (she got her first ride in Colorado). Swinging is a favorite pastime of Eleanore's (always her first choice at the park) and her sisters are following suit. They were super happy swinging away.
These swings are just right for two!
Sunday morning it was time to head home, but we were sure to get a photo of all these cousins together (only missing the three OLDER Buckley cousins, the Kalman boys).
We sure had fun in Savannah. We're glad we took the time to go see something new and connect with the Marx family again. Cousins are the greatest and I know Bryan really loved getting a chance to stay up late and chat with his brother and sister. We're now looking forward to Thanksgiving when we'll get the chance to go north again and see the Marx's at Samantha's baptism.

Between your two families I think you could colonize a small island with just little ones!! Fun seeing all of the pictures. Audrey actually knows all of your girls' names because we are always checking in on your blog.
We had a great time hanging with all of you. Can't wait to do it again!
What a fun time - family, cousins, a new place to visit, etc! I have to say that one of my favorite pics was the twins in the baby swing together...love their grins.
